Gray Whale Watching in Puerto Chale
Meet Baja’s Gray Whales Up Close
Friendly Encounters in Puerto Chale’s Bay
From January to March, Puerto Chale becomes one of Baja’s most extraordinary whale watching destinations. In Bahía Almejas, it’s possible to see over 200 gray whales in a single day, an ocean spectacle few places on Earth can match. Imagine dozens of spouts rising at once, mothers guiding their calves through calm waters, and giant tails splashing against the horizon — a natural wonder that makes Puerto Chale truly unforgettable.
Our adventure begins early in the morning from Cabo San Lucas, driving along Baja’s desert coastline until we reach the quiet fishing village of Puerto Chale. Here, we board a local boat and head into the calm waters of Bahía Almejas, where mangroves and seabirds line the bay.
Once the boat leaves the shore, the landscape transforms into open ocean. The calm waters of Bahía Almejas, surrounded by mangroves and birdlife, build a sense of anticipation — the stillness before the first whales appear.

As we reach the whales, the experience is extraordinary. Known for their curiosity, gray whales often breach, lift their heads, or swim alongside the boat. In Bahía Almejas it’s common to spot mothers with calves and groups of adults nearby — sometimes so many that the horizon feels alive.
Guided by local experts, every sighting reveals more about their migration and behavior, creating a truly unforgettable encounter.
It's important to remember that at Breathe Out Baja the safety of our guests and the respect for marine wildlife are always our top priorities. We never force interactions; instead, we let the whales decide when to approach, ensuring that every encounter is natural and authentic. We proudly comply with the Mexican Official Standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-201, which regulates whale watching activities in Mexico, guaranteeing that each tour is conducted in a respectful, conscious, and environmentally responsible way.
