Whale Watching in Cabo San Lucas
Humpbacks & Gray Whales
HEAR THE OCEAN: HYDROPHONE ON BOARD
The majestic humpback whales amaze visitors every year in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, offering a unique opportunity to see them breach, tail-slap, and socialize. What truly sets our tour apart is our marine hydrophone: we lower it into the water so you can listen live to humpback songs—haunting rhythms, whistles, and pulses you can’t hear from the surface. It turns a great sighting into a multi-sensory experience and gives quieter moments meaning as well: even when whales are out of view, their voices often carry through the water. We keep group sizes low, never box animals in, and let them set the pace from the boat.
WHALE SEASON IN CABO: DEC–APR
The humpback whale migration in Cabo San Lucas runs mainly from December to April. These mammals travel from colder northern waters to the Mexican Pacific to mate and give birth, so you may witness tender moments with playful calves alongside attentive adults. On good days, surface activity can include breaches, pectoral fin waves, tail slaps, and relaxed cruising. While wildlife is never guaranteed, Cabo is widely recognized for a high probability of encounters throughout the season—often signaled by distant blows on the skyline and seabirds gathering over active water. We scan the distance and share sightings in real time, helping catch action as it unfolds.

HOW WE WATCH IN CABO: SMALL GROUPS, SMART MOVES
We set out from Cabo San Lucas with a clear plan and a calm approach. We choose our grounds from Cabo—Pacific headlands or the Sea of Cortez—based on the day’s sea state and the freshest reports. We keep groups small and deliberately avoid crowded sightings; if a spot gets busy (by law, a maximum of four boats per whale), we hold back or move on so the encounter stays relaxed. On location we favor very low speeds, generous spacing, and quiet repositioning; when conditions allow, we drift with engines on low to reduce noise. We rotate viewpoints so everyone gets a great angle without pushing closer—better photos, less stress, and unhurried time to watch natural behavior.
It's important to remember that at Breathe Out Baja we practice whale watching in a respectful and conscious way, always prioritizing the well-being of marine wildlife. For this reason, we strictly comply with the Mexican Official Standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010, which regulates whale watching in Mexico to guarantee safe, sustainable and unforgettable encounters with humpback and gray whales in Cabo San Lucas.
