Swim with Whale Sharks in La Paz

Snorkel Adventure in Calm Waters

LA PAZ WHALE SHARK SEASON

Whale shark season in La Paz isn’t tied to a calendar date—by law, the protected zone opens only when officials verify more than seven whale sharks inside the designated area and declare conditions safe. The viewing window typically spans late fall to spring, with the strongest activity in mid-winter as plankton concentrates. Because timing varies year to year, most travelers target December–March for the best odds. Permits and go/no-go calls hinge on verified shark presence, weather, and visibility, so we keep plans flexible and set departures around real-time conditions. Our role is to read the ocean and move respectfully—small groups, calm pace—so your swim stays safe, considerate, and unforgettable.

FROM CABO TO LA PAZ

We depart from Cabo San Lucas in the morning for a scenic two-hour coastal drive to La Paz. On arrival at the marina, we board and deliver a concise on-boat briefing covering the day’s flow, how we position with the animal, and how entries work. Then we head into La Paz Bay to begin the search—on a typical day it takes 15–45 minutes, depending on sea state and where plankton concentrates. As we cruise, we read surface traces (current lines, color changes, gentle slicks, and occasional fin tips) and carefully coordinate positioning so you’re ready to slip in quietly, calmly and efficiently when the first whale shark appears.

IN-WATER ENCOUNTER

When a whale shark is sighted, we guide you into the water in small groups, matching the animal’s pace and keeping safe spacing. We position you for unhurried, respectful moments alongside these filter-feeding giants. Entries are coordinated—we slide in, avoid the head and tail, and keep hands to ourselves so behavior stays natural. We rotate turns fairly so everyone gets quality time, with easy surface recoveries between drops. Watching a whale shark glide and feed in the Sea of Cortez is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—made smoother with clear in-water coaching and quality gear from start to finish.

SAN RAFAELITO (OPTIONAL)

If you’d like to extend the adventure, add a visit to the San Rafaelito sea-lion colony (optional, extra cost). Here, playful sea lions live among rocky islets with clear water and vibrant reefs, offering chances to see them swimming, resting, or interacting in their natural environment. During the ride, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and, with a bit of luck, spot sea birds and turtles gliding along the surface. It’s a perfect complement to whale sharks—two iconic La Paz experiences in one day.

It's important to remember that whale shark tours in La Paz are strictly regulated to guarantee safe and sustainable encounters. Each day is divided into a limited number of time slots, with permits assigned in advance to control boat numbers and protect the animals. This system ensures an eco-conscious and well-managed experience, allowing visitors to enjoy close, respectful moments with these gentle giants of the Sea of Cortez.
