WHALE SHARK SNORKELING ADVENTURE IN LA PAZ
Whale Shark Season in La Paz
Swimming with whale sharks in La Paz is one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Baja California Sur. Each season, these gentle giants arrive in the calm, plankton-rich waters of La Paz Bay, creating one of the best opportunities in Mexico to snorkel alongside whale sharks in their natural habitat.
The whale shark season in La Paz does not start on a fixed calendar date. By law, the protected viewing area opens only when authorities confirm the presence of more than seven whale sharks inside the designated zone and declare conditions safe. In most years, the best time to swim with whale sharks in La Paz is from late fall through spring, with December to March usually offering the best chances of sightings.
From Cabo to La Paz: The Whale Shark Tour Experience
Our whale shark tour begins with a scenic morning drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz. Once at the marina, we board the boat and provide a clear briefing covering the day’s plan, safety procedures, and the guidelines for respectful whale shark encounters in La Paz. From there, we head into La Paz Bay to begin the search. On most days, it takes between 15 and 45 minutes to locate whale sharks, depending on sea conditions, visibility, and where plankton is concentrated.
When a whale shark is sighted, guests enter the water in small groups to snorkel alongside the animal at a calm, controlled pace. We carefully coordinate entries, maintain safe spacing, and follow all official regulations to ensure a smooth and respectful encounter. After the whale shark swim, we continue the tour with a visit to the San Rafaelito sea lion colony near La Paz, where sea lions are often seen resting on the rocks or swimming in the clear waters around the reef—adding a second memorable wildlife encounter in the Sea of Cortez.

Whale Shark Regulations in La Paz
Whale shark tours in La Paz are strictly regulated to protect both the animals and their habitat. Access to the protected zone is controlled through a limited number of daily permits and official time slots, which helps reduce boat traffic and ensures a more sustainable experience.
Because whale shark sightings depend on real wildlife conditions, tours are always subject to the confirmed presence of whale sharks, as well as weather, visibility, and sea state. For that reason, we keep plans flexible and make decisions based on current conditions, always prioritizing safety, legal compliance, and respectful wildlife viewing.
