Whale Sharks in La Paz
DAY TRIP FROM CABO SAN LUCAS
Snorkel with the Biggest Fish on the Planet
Whale Shark Season in La Paz
Swimming with whale sharks in La Paz is one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Baja California Sur. Each season, these gentle giants arrive in the calm, plankton-rich waters of La Paz Bay, creating one of the best opportunities in Mexico to snorkel alongside whale sharks in their natural habitat.
The whale shark season in La Paz does not start on a fixed calendar date. By law, the protected viewing area opens only when authorities confirm the presence of more than seven whale sharks inside the designated zone and declare conditions safe. In most years, the best time to swim with whale sharks in La Paz is from late fall through spring, with December to April usually offering the best chances of sightings.

Expedition Details
Our whale shark tour starts with a scenic drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz, followed by a boat departure into the bay in search of whale sharks. After a full safety and wildlife briefing, we cruise through the Sea of Cortez to locate these gentle giants, which are commonly found feeding near the surface during the season. Once spotted, guests snorkel in small groups alongside the whale sharks in a respectful and controlled way. The tour also includes a visit to the San Rafaelito sea lion colony, where playful sea lions are often seen swimming and resting around the reef.

Swim with Whale Shark Regulations
Whale shark tours in La Paz are strictly regulated through limited daily permits and official time slots to ensure a sustainable experience and habitat protection. However, since sightings depend on real-time wildlife conditions, weather, and sea state, all tours remain flexible and subject to the confirmed presence of the sharks. We prioritize safety, legal compliance, and respectful wildlife viewing, making all operational decisions based on current environmental conditions to guarantee a responsible encounter.
